The healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) is a monthly contribution from Dienst Toeslagen towards your mandatory Dutch health insurance. Whether you get it, and how much, depends on your income and your assets.
Below a threshold income you receive the maximum. Above it the allowance tapers down in a straight line until it reaches zero at the income limit. The calculator applies that taper for your situation and checks the asset limit first.
Worked example: a single person earning EUR 28,000 receives about EUR 129 a month; a couple with EUR 40,000 combined receives about EUR 195 a month.
You must be 18 or older, have Dutch health insurance, and live in the Netherlands with a valid residence status. The allowance is based on your estimated income for the whole year, so report a raise or a new job to Dienst Toeslagen straight away: an allowance paid on too low an estimate has to be paid back. Rates and thresholds are indexed every year. The calculator uses the published 2026 figures; check the Belastingdienst for your own tax year before you act on a result.
Yes, if you are 18 or older, have Dutch health insurance, and your income and assets are under the limits. Nationality does not matter; a valid residence status does.
Your assessment income (toetsingsinkomen) for the whole calendar year, together with that of your allowance partner. It is an estimate during the year and is settled after your tax return.
Dienst Toeslagen recalculates the allowance after the year and you repay the difference. Updating your estimate as soon as your income changes avoids a large repayment.
