Add VAT to a net amount or take it out of a gross amount, at the Dutch rates of 21%, 9% or 0%. The calculator shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount, and keeps a history of your calculations.
Some activities are exempt, such as healthcare, education and financial services. Exempt is not the same as 0%: with an exemption you cannot reclaim the VAT on your costs.
To add VAT, multiply the net amount by 1.21 (or 1.09). To take VAT out of a gross amount, divide by 1.21 (or 1.09); the difference is the VAT. Taking 21% off the gross amount is a common mistake: EUR 121 gross is EUR 100 net plus EUR 21 VAT, while 21% of EUR 121 is EUR 25.41.
VAT (btw) you charge is not income. You collect it for the Belastingdienst and pay it over in your VAT return, usually every quarter, minus the VAT on your business purchases. With revenue of at most EUR 20,000 a year you can opt for the small business scheme and charge no VAT. Rates and thresholds are indexed every year. The calculator uses the published 2026 figures; check the Belastingdienst for your own tax year before you act on a result.
The standard rate is 21%. A reduced rate of 9% applies to food, medicines, books and some services, and 0% to exports and intra-EU business supplies.
Divide the gross amount by 1.21 to get the net amount; the difference is the VAT. For the reduced rate divide by 1.09.
Most businesses file every quarter, and the return and payment are due by the end of the month after the quarter.
